Experience behind the investigation
R. L. Chauncey is a U.S. Army veteran with an extensive military-intelligence background. He served as an interrogator and instructor, held a Top Secret clearance with access to Sensitive Compartmented Information, and worked at the National Military Intelligence Center (NMIC) in the Pentagon.
During the Mariel boatlift, he was assigned under the auspices of the Defense Intelligence Agency to help screen Cubans entering the United States. That assignment brought him alongside personnel from the FBI, CIA, and other government agencies.
During the 1980s, he also performed liaison work between the United States and German governments.
He later worked as a paramedic, making consequential decisions in circumstances where incomplete information, human behavior, and time pressure could not be separated.
That experience informs the Alex Harlan series: crime thrillers concerned not only with what investigators can prove, but with what they suspect, what they overlook, and what happens when the evidence leaves room for doubt.
Chauncey has also appeared as a guest on the nationally televised Montel program. He lives in North Florida.
